About Tom Wolosz's Reading & Writing

My interests are mainly character driven. I enjoy good situational stories, and space opera is always a blast, but when I write I try to make the character multidimensional. As a result I like to read history and biography that tries to get inside the head of the person being written about. I also like good general history which really describes how people though and acted - not just what happened. We are not the same philosophically as people were 100 years ago, nor will people be exactly like us 100 years in the future. The great thing about speculative fiction is that you can explore those possible differences. Would a 19th Century general have been appalled by the thought of a nuke taking out a city? We accept it as fact and some war games are based on it. What would it be like if people accepted the fact that an entire planet could be destroyed? Would they be horrified, or would they just accept it as another tactic in their arsenal? Maybe in some ways we're not that different!
