It really does happen, people. Berkley editor Susan Allison read my chapters right here, asked for the full, and I ended up with an agent and a book deal! http://www.mediabistro.com/galleycat/kerry-schafer-lands-book-countrys-first-deal_b45120

How encouraging!

Out of a selfish curiosity, may I ask how the editor / agent was made aware of your work? Were they reading stories on the site at random? Were you already known in some way to them? Had your story been well reviewed?

Again, huge congrats..
All best,
VH

ConGrats Kerry! You *are* a good writer and it's Berkley's good fortune that they found you. All the best to you!

YOU DESERVE THIS! Couldn't have happened to a more wonderful person. I'll be able to brag that I knew you back when you were a little twit(ter) pal of mine!

BTW...dibs on an autographed ARC signed by "Kerry Schafer, Author Extraordinaire and fellow House Lamb fan."

Thank you all for the congrats! I'm still finding it hard to believe it actually happened, despite all evidence to the contrary. In response to the question of how it happened - I think Danielle read the chapters and mentioned to Susan Allison that she might like what I was writing. And my agent, Deidre Knight, has spent a fair bit of time reading on Book Country and signed another writer from that process awhile back. So agents and editors are definitely spending time here scouting.

I heard the piece about you on NPR (fellow Washingtonian!) and that's why I am joining the site. Not to get a book deal or anything, although I do have a novel I'm posting - but more for a great writer friend who needs a community like this. Also, because after graduate school, it is difficult to find other writers in "my genre" - I just want to finish this story. I have a couple of books (poetry and a cookbook) but want real feedback on this (what, Romance/Mystery/Thriller? exACTly) novel I wrote for NANOWriMO - this site is a great idea!

HUGE congratulations, and BEST of luck. Just remember to find good people who trust your instinct about your own work. It is your work, and your life, after all!

Congratulations! I agree that it really shows how Book Country is a wonderful opportunity. Not only do you get honest feedback for your work, but you never know who's watching  Way to go!!

Shannon - hello fellow Washingtonian - so cool that you joined the site because of the radio interview. Welcome!

George - Danielle Poiesz, who works here at Book Country, emailed to make the initial contact for Susan Allison. My privacy was completely respected, and if for some strange reason I hadn't wanted the editor contact, things would have stopped at that point.

Thanks to everybody for all of the congrats and good wishes! I am now hard at work on edits - that is apparently a process that never ends, lol.

Excellent news! You deserve it. I guess this means I will have to wait for the book to come out before I can read more. Sigh. I've only just found it, too.
