What's the current consensus about using a serial comma in your sentences?

I like to use it because it's traditional, it helps clarify meaning, and it's always been my habit.

I use the serial comma in my own writing without really thinking about it. Now I'm going to have to go through and search for instances of this in my novel out of curiosity.

I don't think there's anything against using a serial comma--I've read novels where authors do it all the time.

I've always used the Oxford comma... Because when I was a child some teacher taught me that if you write this in your will:

I give my estate to Sarah, John and Harry.

it means that Sarah will receive 50%, and then John and Harry will receive 50%. However, if you write:

I give my estate to Sarah, John, and Harry.

it means that Sarah will receive 33.3%, John 33.3%, and Harry 33.3%. As a middle child, this traumatized me enough to use the Oxford comma ever since. Now, whether or not that will ever actually happen is up for debate (though, I guess that lawyers are probably looking for any legal loop hole possible, right?) but, it left an impression on me.
