Raise your hand if you are headed to the Slice Literary Writers' Conference in Brooklyn September 12-13, 2015. Book Country (ie BC Director Lucy Silag--me) will be there. I'd love to meet you in person so be sure and let me know if you will be there, too!

Here are the details for the panel I'm moderating at Slice this year:

Unconventional Paths to Publishing

We’re all familiar with the traditional path to getting published: write a manuscript or book proposal, find an agent, then have your agent match you with the perfect publisher. That is the most treaded route, but sometimes authors break conventions and find their own ways to publishing a book. And these authors aren’t renegades or rebels—they’re simply tapping into resources that are available to all of us. Discover how others have landed book deals while eschewing established practices, how unconventional paths to publishing could work for you, and how publishers feel about authors who come to them in unexpected ways.

Panelists: Alys Arden, Author, The Casquette Girls; Anjali Duva, Author, Faint Promise of Rain; Kerri Kolen, Executive Editor, G.P. Putnam’s Sons; Maris Kreizman, Publishing Project Specialist, Kickstarter; Carmen Maria Machado, Author

Moderator: Lucy Silag, Community Manager, Penguin/Book Country

And here are the details for the workshop I am leading right after the panel:

Your Next Step as a Writer with Lucy Silag of Book Country

Standing out in the crowded literary marketplace is overwhelming, with writers juggling advice about craft, MFAs, agents, publishers, self-publishing, social media, building a platform, and more. Facilitated by Lucy Silag of Book Country (an online writing community owned by Penguin Random House), this workshop is designed to help writers figure out the next step toward reaching their writing and publishing goals. Each participant will leave with a customized, immediate, and actionable plan for their book or work-in-progress based on where they are in the writing process. Refreshments and materials will be provided.

When + Where: Saturday, September 12, from 3:45pm to 5:00pm, Room TBA

Note that this workshop is free to all conference attendees. We ask that you please register in advance so we can have a sense of how large the group will be.
