I have the idea for a historical mystery set on Long Island, New York in
the latter part of the nineteenth century/early twentieth (say 1898 to
1903).  I've been able to find out that the police department there at
that time consisted of a constabulary, but I'm not quite sure how that
worked.  My big question is who would handle a murder?  Would it be the
constable or the sheriff?  How would they go about investigating, and
who would handle it?  I know it's a lot of questions, but I've just
started investigating it, so any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
