Short Bio:

I smile when I look back at all the wonderful memories that I can awaken, feed, and dress to become stories you can enjoy and that will hopefully live on when I can no longer put pen to paper. I can't imagine my life without this craft. I absolutely love and promote any writings of the Southern Gothic genre. Favorite quote: "Whenever I’m asked why Southern writers particularly have a penchant for writing about freaks, I say it is because we are still able to recognize one."--Flannery O'Connor. I'm currently a Projects Designer/Craftsman, but in a past life have worked as a policeman, pilot, soldier, wilderness survival instructor, burger flipper, boxer, pineapple picker, cliff diver, and lifeguard. I enjoy flying aerobatic aircraft, engaging conversation, primitive camping, orienteering, cooking, traveling abroad, and of course, a good book.

About R.E. Vaughn's Reading & Writing

I enjoy short stories more than any other literary genre, particularly those that deal with this gritty, sometimes messy thing called life. I'm fond of any author who is unafraid to show honesty and pay homage to the written word in portraying the less-than-perfect characters in their works; if the dialogue or characterization calls for profanity or violence to ring true-to-life, I'm all for it, though I'm not a big fan of porn or gruesome, graphic violence in my reading. My own writing tends to be situational, sometimes brutal, but always believable. And I guess that's the benchmark for me, in both reading and writing--there has to be believability in the story. Odd people in ordinary situations or ordinary people in odd situations characterize my stories. There is always, without question, conflict. I write initially with no given ending in mind, but it somehow makes it into the story. I'm a minimalist in description, enjoy dialectic dialogue and appreciate brevity in the exposition.
