Short Bio:

xen (ˌzen) 1. Combining form, indicating something strange, different, or foreign – from Greek xenos, ‘strange.’ 2. Writer. Artist. Audiophile. LGBT. Geek. Xen Sanders is a 34-year-old Chicago-based writer and artist. He’s been a book editor, a cover artist, a literary agent intern, a corporate data analyst, a really bad bassist in a really bad rock band. With a focus on diversity in fiction, he writes dark science fiction with a supernatural bent – seeking to tell stories that explore and push the boundaries of race, culture, gender, and sexuality. That’s a very long way of saying he’s not fond of stereotyping, gender norms, or whitewashing. He also finds a way to sneak something about Kowloon Walled City in every story, whether it’s just one mention or the story is set in some version of the city. And he’s really bad at these third-person bios. So he’s going to stop typing now and go watch season 5 of Fringe.

About Xen Sanders's Reading & Writing

Is "everything" a valid answer to this? I'm a complete book omnivore, and I care more about well-developed characters than about genre labels. I will admit a leaning toward darker stories, and I'm always looking for diversity in science fiction and fantasy, with diverse characters portrayed in non-stereotypical ways and in leading roles rather than just as support cast. Other than that...I love a good story, and love to be surprised, so I'll give anything a try. As far as my writing, though...I tend to lean toward dark science fiction with LGBT and POC central characters, and often with influences of East Asian supernatural mythology.
