Hayley Smith's writing style is influenced by the Belgian author Amélie Nothomb in many different ways. Her writing is based on events she has seen and witnessed: as a foreign exchange student in Japan last year, she saw with her own eyes the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Encouraged to write after reading several different novels dealing with the Japan Airlines crash of 1985, she hopes to work as a translator after graduation.
