About Matthew Chan's Reading & Writing

I grew up alongside the rise of modern medias: movies, tv, graphic novels/manga, video games, social networks, etc. I love any writing that doesn't fight against these, but instead embraces them. Storytelling is a constantly evolving form, and I have the greatest respect for authors who are willing to make the most of the world even as it changes. I'm also greatly attracted to stories grounded in a well thought-out meta-science. Whether it be alchemy in Fullmetal Alchemist, the world as a program in The Matrix, or the spells of Harry Potter. Unlimited freedom isn't what makes fantasy fun, but rather the rules of the world and how an author can bend them in compelling ways. My biggest pet peeve is deus ex machina endings. Besides writing, I'm an avid gamer. In particular, I love competitive games because of the varied and often wildly creative strategies great players come up with. I also love to snowboard, draw and, model 3D characters.
