Someone mentioned George Saunders somewhere and I picked up CivilWarLand in Bad Decline at a Barnes and Noble. I had never read something so entertaining and funny while at the same time hitting me so deeply. That same feeling would describe Murakami's fiction as well. After that, I wanted all stories to have talking cats and ghosts in them that provide life lessons.
