Although his genre is nominally science fiction, Joe strives to create realistic characters that have depth. He holds that dialogue is key to carrying forward a story. His stories are not "out there" like other science fiction. Rather, he treats his characters as normal contemporary individuals who are placed in situations that challenge their perceptions, beliefs and instincts. Through them, the reader is equally challenged. At least that's the goal.
