I tend to write whatever idea comes to me; sometimes it's a genre I'm comfortable with (science fiction/fantasy) or a genre I have to step out of the comfort zone for (contemporary). I read whatever interests me. A genre I don't normally read? Doesn't matter, if the story sounds good, I'll read.
