About the Book:

Award-winning novelist and Texas historian Myra Hargrave McIlvain tells the story of Amelia Anton, a young German woman eager for a new life in Texas. After arriving in 1845 with the early wave of German immigrants, she is abandoned by her sponsor. Amelia soon makes a quick decision to marry Dr. Joseph Stein, the kindly German doctor she met on shipboard, and settles with him on the barren coast when hundreds of German immigrants are dying while awaiting transportation to the promised inland settlements. Amelia discovers that Dr. Stein needs a wife as a cover for a lifestyle completely foreign to anything she understands. Amelia plays her role as the wife of a gentle and caring doctor and community leader while struggling with a growing desire for a family of her own and helping the new town develop as the thriving seaport of Indianola. After the death of Hans Fischer, a handsome young man with whom Dr. Stein partners in a mercantile business, Amelia finally understands the mystery of her husband's love. The discovery propels a joint compromise.

Author's Note:

I received excellent suggestions when I submitted the first chapter of The Doctor's Wife. I have rewritten the beginning and finished the 99k manuscript. Actually, I'm still polishing. I want to submit again, but I'm not sure how to do it.
