About the Book:

Rural Stebbings County, Ohio has a new pastor. Arthur Lehmann is an Episcopal priest who has come to this quiet place to grieve. Then one night, while walking his dog, Lehmann is attacked by a strange animal. His passions return, but something is horribly wrong. Under the full moon, he is consumed by the primal cravings of a beast: he hungers, he craves, he lusts. Meanwhile a child has been raped, another murdered. He must console the victims’ families. A favorite teacher commits suicide. Then one day, at a football game at school, Lehmann picks up a foul smell. Lehmann roams the woods and finally finds the source of the stench. A teacher, Mr. Ravitch, blackmails girls on the cheerleading squad, seducing them, photographing them. One night, the stench is strong on the wind and he follows it to Ravitch’s isolated house, where Ravitch is photographing and seducing yet another girl. Lehmann pursues Ravitch and tears his throat out—his first human kill. He is a murderer.
