Last week, I completed The Phoenix Diary and now I need an agent & a publisher. I found one of each who are actively seeking works like mine and while taking notes on their submission guidelines, it occurred to me that others here might want to know about them.

DAW Books (Sci-Fi & Fantasy)

http://www.penguin.com/meet/publishers/daw/

Nelson Literary Agency (Lead titles -meaning, they look for first books.)

http://nelsonagency.com/submission-guidelines/

Luck to Ye

Feel free to add to this list as you too seek an agent & publisher. We are not competitors, we are artists and each work is unique.

Help your fellow writer

I had to promise my Lady I would not discuss that.

This is helpful, GD. I'll check it out. And save it in a safe spot. (Where I know I can find it.) Another member recently sent me an email address for someone who wants to see anything to do with cats. I'll find it later and put it up here. I'm getting ready to go to work.

.

I'm still tweaking my letter to Mark Knopfler. Weighing, what can I say that would convince someone in his management office to forward it to him, deciding 'Mark might want to see this'. I adore him, I certainly do, but his wife publishes with Jonathan Cape and I'm thinking, if he sees it and is intrigued, and she sees it, maybe . . .

.

Yeah, I live in my fantasy world. Pity me, friends.

I'm impressed with the creativity of your networking, Mimi, but ...it may be in Dire Straits.

Dire Straits is kaput, GD, as of the late nineties. He has a very successful solo career going, possibly even more distinguished than Dire. (For which, by the way, he wrote all the music. He was Dire Straits.) I truly adore his solo work, a great range of styles, his amazing lyrics and guitar work as always. Stunning orchestral pieces as well. An unbelievable talent.

.

I'd be writing to him even if his wife weren't with J. Cape. I always loved Dire Straits, but I only discovered his solo work six months ago. My husband digs bagpipe music. Some of Mark's pieces use pipes of one kind or another. YouTube brings up suggestions based on what you're watching. We were steered to a piece he performed with the Royal Scottish Black Watch Regiment, bagpipes. I saw the name Knopfler attached to it and said, I know that guy. Let's check him out. I've been hooked on him ever since.

Here's a list that's regularly updated (sort of). It's mostly for fantasy, but a lot of fantasy agents want scifi as well. Hope it helps!

I'm at work now, GD. It's a slow night so I'm bopping into the break room and jumping on the web. Like I said, I have the name of an agent that wants to see anything to do with cats, for all the good it will do most of us. I got it from arnbar. He may have more, He seems to be resourceful. I'll point him to this thread.

.

I'll look for that in my saved emails tomorrow. We've been in contact via email.

No rush. I have to change the names of my main characters now to Boots, Fluffy & Snowball.

I was going to suggest that one of your characters might be animated by a cat-demon or something. You've got them riding around on broomsticks, don't you? A cat demon would fit right in.

.

Oh crap! I think it was Atthys with the broomsticks. Never mind.

.

It's coming back to me now. It was flying carpets. Sorry, Atthys. It's a long time since I read it.

Another useful site for searching for an agent is http://www.agentquery.com/. You can put in all sorts of search parameters (fiction genre, nonfiction genre, does agent accept email, is agent actively looking for new clients). Each agent's record has details about the type of work they've represented in the past and are currently looking to represent. There is also information about how to contact them. And, most importantly, there are links to the agent's web site (or agency's web site), where you can find current information about submission requirements.

Whoa! That's a real treasure trove!

Thanks, Angela. Now I'm really glad you're back. As an editor, this is, after all, your professional field.

Thanks, GD, but I'm afraid the medical publishing companies I've worked for in the past don't use agents. tongueout

This month's (October 2014) Writer's Digest features articles on:

Your Guide To Getting An Agent

28 Agents Looking For New Writers Now!

Dos & Don'ts For Querying Your Novel

I bought it but haven't read it yet. Hope it's worth the seven bucks.

Does anyone have a feel for whether popular writers magazines are worth reading?
