What genre is A.S. Byatt's Possession?

I'm interested in fiction that flips back and forth between two different historical periods - present and some specific past. A.S. Byatt's Possession has these qualities, and has the mystery of trying to find out the historical characters' relationships, etc. through letters. If there was more of a thriller aspect, what genre would this be? I'm new to this site - just fascinated by the genre question.

Sorry I didn't see this thread earlier.

I would call POSSESSION a literary historical mystery, myself, but others may disagree.

I like that back and forth mix too. Possession is historical fiction. A real time period with references to historical characters and also fictional ones. Crystobel Lamott is fiction and so is Ashe.
