My writing benefits by attention to detail and the expertise I have in my favoured pursuits. I started writing picture book manuscripts before trying my hand at postcard and short stories. A short fiction piece “Arbutus Madrone” was published by Chiron Press. A poem, “The Night My Mother Died”, received a 2nd place award in BC arts councils’ Spirit 150 literary competition. In Campbell River we have the Haig-Brown writer-in-residence/mentor program. I presented the first chapters of my linked novel to author M Doyle and she was supportive, saying my writing “reads well, is enjoyable with a strong sense of place…..clean clear prose, carefully controlled.” An adapted chapter from the novel will be published this year in an anthology of north island writers.
My reading is varied but I favour Canadian literary fiction. Authors I enjoy include Kerouac, Hesse, Graham Greene, Vonnegut and Greek writers, Kazantzakis and Karnezis.
