Editors, booksellers, and readers describe books by their literary categories, or genres. It's how books are placed in stores and sold online. It's how readers discover your book. As a writer, knowing your book's category is essential to finding an audience. It's like the country filled with people who love to read what you write. A country filled with writers just like you.
We created the Genre Map to help you find the right category for your book. Some categories, such as women's fiction, stand alone. If you select mystery, fantasy, romance, science fiction, or thriller, you'll see the many subgenres that you can explore within these categories. For example, Lord of the Rings, is a landmark high/epic fantasy. It's very different than Dead Until Dark, the start of the immensely popular urban fantasy series about southern vampires. Both books contain magic and supernatural elements; however, they attract very different audiences.
Some genres have been around as long as people have been writing. Others are new. We know that not every literary category is represented here. We chose the 60+ categories whose writers could benefit the most from writing and publishing within a community. It's our intention that the Genre Map will continue to change as new literary categories emerge and others fall out of fashion. Please contact us if there's a category you'd like to see on the Genre Map.
Select a literary category to connect with writers just like you, workshop your book, discover the must-reads, and build your first audience as you prepare to publish. Find your home on the Book Country Genre Map.
